Last night and tonight, Nick and I went to a church outreach ministry. All I can say is, what an amazing experience this was. The speakers name was Doug Brummel. His presentation involved him dressing up as 7 different characters throughout the course of the 2 nights and each character had a different idea or perspective on what it meant to live a life filled with God.
The first, and probably the funniest character, was Estelle. Estelle was thinking about becoming Catholic and was confused about the terminology used and used the audience to help clarify her questions.
The second character was Andy. Andy is a lifetime college student who has majored in almost every possible major, but was, at one point a religious studies major and was being tested by one of his friends as to what Catholics really believe. He was also trying to debunk some of the myths that his friend had heard about the Catholic Church such as statue worship and saint worship.
The next character was Hoover (not to be confused with the vacuum). Hoover was a retired farmer that was hired to do maintenance at the church. One day while cleaning up outside the church, Hoover was approached by a gentleman that was looking for a new church. He asked Hoover was he really believed about the church and his response was an amazing dramatic and theatrical interpretation of the Apostles Creed.
Then came Old Man Joe who was a widow. Joe lost his wife to cancer 2 years ago and his faith got him through that tough time of his life. He had been married for 57 years and they together had a daughter was at the age of 12 was hit by a car. Joe's belief in the resurrection and knowing that his wife and daughter went on to a better place made it possible for him to get through this. Joe has, over the years, been visited and been befriended by the youth group kids and through this Joe has became aware through his journey that old people can learn as much from young people as young people can learn from old people.
Tonight's cast of characters included Sister Simon who helped to teach us the 10 commandments and really discuss what it means to be a follower of Christ and live a Christ like life; Timmy the young child who has learned so much about his faith from his family; and Rob the grown adult trying to figure out how to manage his daily schedule yet still find time to have a relationship with God.
There really was something in this ministry for all ages. It was so upbeat and interactive, you really did lose track of time. Doug had us laughing and crying and every emotion in between. There was not a thing about these two nights that didn't resonate deep down in your soul. Each night I walked away vowing to be a better wife, mother and daughter of Christ.
Nick and I went together. I did not take Averi and Aiden because it was long and I think it would have been too much for them, but Nick thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening. I have not heard him laugh like that and talk so much about one thing in a long time.
I can not say enough good about this program. I am so glad that we went to this. The starting time was odd; 6:47. After thinking about this I figured it had to be a verse in the Bible and I was right. John 6:47; I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life. And this was the main idea throughout both nights. Your denomination does not matter, just that we all believe. He who believes will have eternal life.
